Bug [David Leikam's alter ego] was born in early 1997 while working with Thomas Merácz at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA, USA where they were studying audio engineering together. Initially, he went by Insect after watching a PBS documentary on the insect world late one night after being in the studio recording with Eichbaum Syndrome. Merácz would often refer to him as Insect God while roaming the streets of Los Angeles, CA, USA into the late nights frequenting Denny's or other midnight diners after long sessions in the audio spectrum. In 2001, while continuing his radio show on KZSU 90.1FM Stanford University on October 4, 2001 at 00:00 since graduating from the California Institute of the Arts (BFA, 1998-2001), he started using David Bug as his On-Air host name which also just gets shortened to Bug often on and off the radio these days.
The Wyld Ones

The Reb Blake Show has changed its name to The Wyld Ones.

The Wild Ones were originally a Marin band formed in 1964 which played at the Fillmore Auditorium & Avalon Ballroom in the Summer of love before disbanding in 1968. In the mid 1970s the band was reformed with one of the original members (Jack Simpson) and Reb Blake before eventually breaking up again around 2002. Today Blake has brought back the spirit of the Wild Ones band, changing the spelling to The Wyld Ones as a nod to the original band. The players consist of veteran artists Drew Youngs on guitar, David Kessner on keys, Bruce Brymer on drums and Reb Blake on bass. Each member is also a singer and songwriter in his own right and has played with every popular Bay Area band and many national touring bands since the mid 60s.
The Wyld Ones represent musical uniqueness and a lifetime of artistic achievement by every member of the band. Armed with a combination of dancing tunes from the entire history of Rock and Roll and spectacular original rock songs and ballads, they sing about everything from the environment, war, love and “catching your face on fire smoking cigarettes”. For a more in depth bio on the band and each of the individual players please see “A conversation with Reb Blake of the Wyld Ones” here and below.

A conversation with Reb Blake of the Wyld Ones (appearing at 19 Broadway March 31, 2010)
By Shelley Champine
Founder, Local Music Vibe
(Photo courtesy of the Wyld Ones - Left to right: Drew Youngs, David Kessner, Bruce Brymer & Reb Blake)

Marin County has had a Wild Ones band since 1964.
Reb: The original Wild Ones started at Redwood High School [Larkspur, CA] and joined the San Francisco Summer of Love Music revolution playing both the Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms with Chuck Berry and the Young Rascals as the Electric Train.

Why was it called Electric Train?
Reb: The name Electric Train was chosen as a better name for the Summer of Love (Fillmore and Avalon) music scene. When the band played for Bill Graham it was for union minimum wage and Jack Simpson would take the check from Graham and then hand it back to him; The band played for the publicity.

Did the same performers play in each band?
Reb: The same players from the Wild Ones were in the Electric Train. Jack Simpson guitar/vocals, John Burk vocals, Paul Burch keyboards/vocals, Keith Taylor drums, Steve Marshall bass. The band was known for its arrogant pictures and a rocking guitar sound à la Moby Grape.

What happened after that?
Reb: In 1967 or 1968 the manager’s house burned up in San Francisco. The masters and most copies of the recordings were lost. The band broke up. (More about the Wild Ones in just a minute)

What bands did you play with in high school?
Reb: My high school bands were the Casuals, an all instrumental band featuring Bruce Walford that I managed as I put my band the Teen Tones together. Other high school bands were the Surf Time, and The Reb Blake Band which became popular in the early small Marin scene doing shows mainly in the many US military enlisted men's clubs around the bay area and Treasure Island. I became fairly well known during this period and had sit-in privileges with the top pop band in the Bay Area from Marin: Butch Engle and the Styx.
(Butch Engle and the Styx were related to the more popular Beau Brummels since Ron Elliott of the Beau Brummels wrote songs for both bands.)

When did you first start playing music?
Reb: I started playing in the third grade when a fellow student, Rich Castleman (of the Marin band The Warlocks) introduced me to the first Ray Charles album. Rich died outside the rock club in Squaw Valley during the middle 60's freeing up the name to be adopted by what became the Grateful Dead. I played in grammar school bands as the guitarist and lead singer for a short while then switched to bass for 7th and 8th grades in the late 50's and early 60's.
(Reb later tells me, “I had to hurt my brain to come up with those names.” referring to the names of his school bands.)

What did you do after high school?
Reb: I returned from Viet Nam in April of 1968 and learned how to play again. I started a band called the Confederate Air Force and toured around the west for several years. The band that I toured with in the late 70's was a quartet: Michael Sklar guitar and vocals (Neville Brothers/Charles Brown), Bruce Walford guitar/vocals, (founder of the Church studio, produced the first Sons of Champlin double album as well as their last). Mitch Howie drums (Clover) and me. I also worked in my family's shipyard and as a firefighter during this time. Then got bored with not performing so I started playing with Sons of Champlin spin-off creations in the local market I then worked as a staff producer at the Church Studio in San Anselmo for a couple of years.

(During that time he also formed a band with veteran Brit studio musician Nicky Hopkins (Beatles, Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones as well as Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Excerpted from the Wikipedia article about Nicky Hopkins: “At the Church Studio in San Anselmo, Marin County, a small jam band formed around Nicky: Bruce Walford, guitar, Larry Holman, drums, and Reb Blake, bass. Hopkins would play his songs and spin tales of his time in London's early rock scene and his father's piano playing in England during World War Two. Hopkins never allowed any of these sessions to be recorded, citing his complete disgust with the music business.”)

Getting back to theThe Wild Ones...The band reformed in the 70s. John Bird, who ended up playing with Quicksilver Messenger Service, was an original (1964) member and you and Bruce Brymer then became part of this group, right?
Reb: Yes. The original reformed Wild Ones were Jack Simpson from the original band and John Bird who worked at Prune Music (and played with Lee Michaels and Dan Hicks) on guitars [along] with Bruce Brymer and myself. A few years down the road Jack Simpson quit and was replaced by Chuck Steaks (Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Beach Boys, Quicksilver Messenger Service) on keyboards. When Chuck pulled out in 1980 we became a trio with John Bird, Bruce and me. We toured the west coast and other western states doing every kind of musical gig from military bases to auto dealerships. John left to join Gary Duncan and the Quicksilver Messenger Service. When John died around 2002 (before his 50th birthday), Bruce and I decided not to go on with the band.

Over the years, the Wild Ones opened for many legendary bands and a lot of notable people sat in. Can you name some?
Reb: … The Ventures to Sammy Hagar, Jessie Collin Young, and Commander Cody and [we had] had sit-ins such as Gary Duncan (Quicksilver) and Terry Haggerty from Sons of Champlin.

Who are the Wyld Ones now?
Reb: Today’s lineup contains no original members but showcases the best musicians ever to be Wild Ones starting with singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, Drew Youngs who has played with Herbie Hancock, Del Pompadours, Steve Miller and was lead vocalist and guitarist for the Tazmanian Devils (signed by Warner Bros). Bruce Brymer, drummer, singer, songwriter who was in bands with Berry Melton (Country Joe and the Fish), Rosie Stone (Sly and the Family Stone) and 19 Broadway legend Chuck Day (Mamas and Papas) plus singer, songwriter, keyboardist David Kessner (Graham Nash, Cold Blood). David Kessner was one of the original partners in Mill Valley's Prune Music Store.

(Rounding out the band are singer, songwriter, bassist, Reb Blake who was also a former manager for Sons of Champlin and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Blake had been gigging as the Reb Blake Show until recently when he decided to change the name to The Wyld Ones as a nod to Marin’s own Summer of Love band. Says Blake, “We just tweaked the spelling of the name because there are now many Wild Ones over the world.”)

Lots of these guys are still playing around the area - Greg Errico, Country Joe, Barry Melton, Kathi McDonald, Sam Andrew, Sly Stone, Rosie Stone, Nick Gravenites, David LaFlamme, Linda LaFlamme, Peter Albin, Roy Blumenfeld, Austin DeLone, etc. Have you thought of having some of them sit in on your gigs?
Reb: Yes I will invite some of those good folks to sit in with us starting with Barry Melton, a dear and valued friend.

Tell us a little bit about that whole scene Prune Music/Mesa Boogie scene.
Reb: Prune was and is famous as the location where Mesa Boogie amplifiers were invented as sonic tools by Randy Smith, another owner, for Carlos Santana so he could achieve his trademark Santana guitar sound.

(According to the Dave Hunter in his book, Guitar: A complete guide for the player, Randall Smith took the "hot-rodded" Princeton into the front store. Coincidentally, Carlos Santana was present and played through the amp. Impressed, Santana told Smith, "Man, that little amp really boogies!", thus providing the current name for the amplifier and the company.)
Reb: I did the first publicity promo for Mesa Boogie while I worked at Prune when I first returned from Nam. Larry Craig, another owner, became known as the guitar tech and repair man to the stars. His clients included Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Doctor Hook and the Medicine Show, Tom Johnson of the Doobie Brothers and many other guitar gods and rock stars.

Any final thoughts?
Reb: We never became social movements or important for making money but a lot a lot of people danced and smiled to our music over those years. And today, with the addition of musician, singer extraordinaire Drew Youngs from Palo Alto High School, the Wyld Ones present a musical uniqueness of lifetime artistic achievement by every member of the Wyld Ones, complex and simple, jazz, pop, blues, rock, classic rock, original singing and instrumental arrangements nobody else is doing in Northern California.
Armed with a combination of dancing tunes from the entire history of Rock and Roll and spectacular original rockers and ballads singing about everything from the environment, war, love and “catching your face on fire smoking cigarettes,” the Wyld Ones offer a show few Marin bands can come near to for sheer musicianship and showmanship.

Critical Measures

Critical Measures is a power jazz and groove band from the San Francisco Bay Area. Todd Bugbee (guitar), Sean England (drums), Ryan Newman (bass) are three like minded individuals bringing their unique talents together to create music steeply based in jazz improvisation, experimental groove with a dash of jam band flavor. The roots of CM3 are buried deep in the soil of Northern California. Although a trio at heart CM3 is also known to feature several friends for live collaborations including Chris Noonan on Tenor Sax (Moo-Got-2), Brian "Swiz" Swislow on Keys (Moo-Got-2) and Cayce Carnahan on Trumpet (Juke Joint)

"The Critical Measures Trio (also known as CM3) plays an exhilarating blend of world party music infused with a one-two punch of vivacious modern jazz and scorching blues. The group starts off with a tight 4/4 beat, a sultry riff, and a bouncy bass groove and then proceeds to steer their funkadelic starship into warp drive, nimbly traversing across galaxies of highly danceable and head-nodding goodness."

HONEYDUST is a rock and roll act based out of Marin County, California (just north of San
Francisco). Their sound and high energy live show is a breath of fresh air for all the true rock fans.
With the raw dinge of Crazy Horse, the dueling southern harmonies of The Alman Brothers and
FRANCESCA LEE

Confiding narratives and striking melodies illustrate the songs of Francesca Lee. Layered and lustrous, the music on her new full-length release, The Pieces Left, radiates from an organic center colored by electronic shadings and beats. As sonic light breaks through the opaque mist of a dense soundscape, the sound mirrors the drama of her locale: San Francisco, home to generations of visionaries. “Nothing is more dreamlike than the adventure of walking in this city,” she says. “I look out my window to see people in the street, a bus moving, a couple fighting on the corner, a homeless man. The inspiration for the album comes from what I visualize everyday.”

In addition to crafting the recordings, Francesca has been headlining with her band The New Believers at high profile NoCal venues like Yoshi’s, Café Du Nord and her home base, Hotel Utah. Selected for inclusion for the KFOG Local Scene 6 CD, Francesca was featured in a live broadcast and interview from San Jose on the station’s Morning Show to celebrate the station’s Local Music Month where she was greeted by a line of fans familiar with her song “Maybe Today” from its regular radio rotation. Additionally, she was featured in a live performance and an on camera interview on KOFYTV 20 Cable 13 in San Francisco and selected as an artist for “Born To Play Live Acoustic” for Gap, Inc., when the retail giant hosted live music in 700 stores nationwide. Attracting cross-cultural audiences is her trademark: the mix of acoustic roots and electronic edges that she titles “Introspective Dream Pop” resonates to a wide spectrum of listeners including artsy Indie kids and fans of serious songwriting.

The daughter of a Polish mother and a Japanese-born Korean father, Francesca grew up between the Bay Area and Texas. She graduated from high school in Alameda, California where she says she “kept to myself and wrote songs.” Her dream was to live in England. Accepted into the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) the college founded by Sir Paul McCartney, Francesca raised tuition money with street performances and personal fundraisers. “Doing that set my foundation for what I do now – organizing and promoting music. I knew I could make it happen if I really wanted it,” she notes.

As a creator, Francesca incorporates an intuitive approach to songwriting. “I have to feel that it comes from the subconscious, from another place. I can feel the story coming out as I let the words channel through me. Some of it is random, but if keep doing this I will get a lyric, or a feeling about what to write about. After that, I just let it flow and then I start making sense of it. But in the beginning I let the music come from my soul.”

This soul connection reverberates within The Pieces Left, in the wistful questions and celebratory moments that inhabit her songs. “I always have hope,” she says. “These songs are more of an observation than anything. They are not about me; they express the emotions that I feel. This is what I work to capture.”

A local band from San Rafael, the Blenders, mix all genres of music to create a sound that unique and original. Three years ago the band was formed when guitarist Alex Smith and drummer and singer Brendan McQueeney started jamming. After teaming up with bassist Lucas Hanson they formed a band. The rest was history. Check us out February 13th at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma.

Guns For San Sebastian

"Charlie Marvin, Lorne Smith, Matt Kelly, JJ White, and Ryan Lukas are bound by a love of '60s and '70s rock and roll, and their sound is uniquely marked by Marvin's soul-filled vocals and White's deft harmonica work." - Jamie Lee, Showered and Blue-Blazered, Charleston, SC

"Guns for San Sebastian presents a refreshing and diverse sound to a generation of listeners smothered by teenage pop stars and synthesized voices....The band unites genres throughout the album, merging modern rock with blues, roots and indie rock inspiration." - Courtney McCaffrey

Heavily influenced by 60s and 70s rock, travel, blues, and saturated tube amps, Guns for San Sebastian plays inspired music exploding with soul, power, and love. Lead singer Charlie Marvin spent years on the road in America and Europe, playing to help make ends meet, and experiencing life in a way that would shape his songs and vocal style forever. Upon returning to the Bay Area three years ago, he met JJ White and Lorne Smith who had been playing together around the Bay Area for six years developing a tight guitar and harmonica attack. Immediately they began jamming and writing the first of what would become Guns for San Sebastian songs. When Matt Kelly joined on drums, his polyrhythmic approach and fusion/progressive background added a new layer of style which created a whole new dynamic. The highly accomplished bass player Ryan Lukas rounded out the band with not only a huge, soul-filling bottom end, but a style that continues to challenge the rock-bass orthodoxy. Together, Guns for San Sebastian is a five-headed beast of rock n roll.

Their self titled debut album, released in March 2009, was recorded at Tim Bluhm and Jackie Greene's Mission Bells Studio and was co-produced / engineered by Charles Gonzalez. Even before the official release a buzz began to circulate around the San Francisco music scene about the new rock band recording in the Mission. Album tracks "Sex with the Devil" and "White Girl (Self Defense)" were getting spins in the clubs by local rock DJs. Days after the album release, they joined the reapandsow family of artsts. Currently Guns for San Sebastian is working on a follow up EP at Mission Bells Studio with Charles Gonzalez, and playing occasional shows around the Bay Area. Recently they have shared the stage with Langhorne Slim (Independent), Samantha Crain (Independent), and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers (Great American Music Hall).

Blame Sally

BLAME SALLY is: Pam Delgado, Renee Harcourt, Jeri Jones and Monica Pasqual. These four accomplished instrumentalist/singers combine their strikingly different approaches to create a distinct and beautiful sound that's been described as emotionally charged, highly melodic, and compelling. The San Francisco Chronicle called Blame Sally's self-produced/self released second album "intelligently emotional, intricately harmonized folk-pop" with "imaginatively arranged, expansive narrative songs."

BLAME SALLY is: Pam Delgado, Renee Harcourt, Jeri Jones and Monica Pasqual. These four accomplished instrumentalist/singers combine their strikingly different approaches to create a distinct and beautiful sound that's been described as emotionally charged, highly melodic, and compelling. The San Francisco Chronicle called Blame Sally's self-produced/self released second album "intelligently emotional, intricately harmonized folk-pop" with "imaginatively arranged, expansive narrative songs."
Neil Young's Living With War website www.neilyoung.com features the BLAME SALLY music video "If You Tell a Lie" in the top ten and rising among videos by Pink, Pearl Jam, Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle and many more. San Francisco's KFOG selected tracks from both previous Blame Sally CDs to appear on its 2003 and 2004 compilations alongside tracks by Paul Simon, Spearhead, Jackie Greene, The Waifs, Dar Williams, and more.

Jay Trainer Band

On his new album Of The Sun Jay Trainer combines thick, prolific guitar riffs and stark lyricism, while drawing on the traditions of funk, rock, blues, and psychedelia to craft a modern classic. The singer/songwriter possesses a unique ability to effortlessly negotiate tone and volume, moving from a quiet, almost jazzy tone to a booming thunder at any given moment. The effect calls to mind the masters of several genres of rock music.

To achieve this, Trainer pulls from his roots: blues revivalists, folksy protest songs, classic songwriters and classic rockers like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers Band. But the aspect that grabs both music lovers and critics is the additional elements ranging from the likes of Black Sabbath to Jane's Addiction. His unique combination of genre-defying compositions and free-form jams have been causing a stir in the local Bay Area scene.

Having recently shared the stage with national acts including North Mississippi All Stars, legendary guitarist Dickey Betts, Robert Walter's 20th Congress (founding member of The Greyboy Allstars), Eric McFadden (former touring member of George Clinton's P-Funk All Stars), Cowboy Mouth and Vinyl, Jay Trainer has created a new foothold in the West Coast music scene with a rare combination of infectious backbeats and guitar driven grooves.

Of course, the live show is what Trainer is known for. His performances are raw, personal and uninhibited. It is clear from his latest release, Of The Sun, that he has brought this same energy to the studio. Tracks like "By Cover Of A Great Lie" and "Of The Sun" capture the emotion and expression of his live performance. Tracks like "Better To Breathe" and "Ever more" show Trainer's ability to use the studio like an additional member of the band. A veteran of countless recording sessions, his "get it in the first take" approach has paid off and is bringing back a great sense of honesty to Rock 'n' Roll.

Additional Info:Jay Trainer is a founder and active member of Artful Change, a social action network that uses the power of art and music to help raise awareness for environmental causes. www.Artfulchange.org is run by Trainer and several local Bay Area artists from San Francisco who are working closely with Greenpeace and several local organizations on issues such as sustainable living, global warming and wildlife conservation.

Bviolin and The January Avalanche

"My new project, January Avalanche, is probably best described as Persian jazz and world fusion folk with a gypsy vibe," Bahman explains. "Over the past year, we've had a great time playing to a growing audience in southern California. After meeting some new people in the San Francisco and Marin music scene, we decided it was the perfect time to take our show on the road and introduce ourselves to Bay Area music fans."

Artist Description:

"My new project, January Avalanche, is probably best described as Persian jazz and world fusion folk with a gypsy vibe," Bahman explains. "Over the past year, we've had a great time playing to a growing audience in southern California. After meeting some new people in the San Francisco and Marin music scene, we decided it was the perfect time to take our show on the road and introduce ourselves to Bay Area music fans."

Bahman's musical journey began in Tehran, Iran, where the uneasy years of his childhood were marked by chapters of triumph and tribulation. Those memories continue to have a profound effect on him to this day.

"I was 4 years old, and my family was being exiled from our country, our home," Bahman recalls. "We were fleeing a land ripped apart by turmoil, and political and social revolution."

"I remember the music of my home land, dancing while my mom sang at parties. I remember always being moved by sound and wanting to be part of it in some way," Bahman says. "I know those days will always be a part of me, every time I play. It's inescapable".

A classically trained violinist, Bahman displays a remarkable mastery of the instrument in every note of his passionate performances. No matter what style he's playing—jazz, funk, fusion, folk or rock—his improvisational skills, raw energy and natural instinct for melody have made him an integral part of many different bands.

But after years of composing music for other artists and touring internationally in other bands, Bahman realized the time was right to tell his own story through his music.

The result is a new project, known as Bviolin and the January Avalanche, and solo debut entitled How This Weighs On Me. The eclectic, new record presents songs and compositions that reflect the diverse influences on his life and music.

"I wanted to create a signature sound—a unique mix of World & Fusion instrumental compositions with hints of gypsy, Middle Eastern flavors—along with lyrical songs influenced by traditional folk," Bahman explains. "So, in addition to playing 4 different instruments myself, I gathered together an amazing group of players."

January Avalanche features Chris Hale on 5-string fretless bass, Michel Rodriguez (AKA Mrod), an eclectic drummer with instinctual syncopated drive, and Reverend Stickman, one of southern California's finest blues and folk guitarists. In addition to performing with his San Diego bandmates, Bahman also plays as an acoustic duo with Rado, a gifted soul/funk/jazz guitarist and singer/songwriter born in Madagascar and based in San Francisco.

I knew this would be the right cast of characters to help tell my story, and put their sonic and spiritual "stamp" on the music," says Bahman.

Much of the album was inspired by Bahman's experience escaping Iran during its national upheaval. One such track is the instrumental "Gypsy Nights."

"It's about a family leaving everything they know and love in their beloved home country, and in the blink of an eye, having to escape the Revolutionary hands that took over the once free and beautiful Iran," Bahman explains. "In a dream one summer's night, the memory of that time returned and Gypsy Nights was written."

The album also features a strong undercurrent of traditional Americana influences that can be heard on tracks such as "Wonder" and "Sun." It's a diverse collection of sounds that's held together seamlessly by Bahman's virtuosic violin playing and vivid storytelling.
