Remember that childhood alphabet game that starts “I’m going on a trip and I’m bringing…an abacus….baseball cards…some cotton candy and um , uh, …a dinosaur”? Well my game goes something like this: “I’m driving 30 hours from San Francisco to Austin and I’m bringing…amps…a blogger…Chuck Prophet’s Van…Deborah Crooks… extension cords and film (the electronic version).
“…and you may say to yourself, well, how did I get here?”
It began when we offered to sponsor some unofficial showcases presented by local impresario KC Turner. We joked about driving down with some of the musicians to save everyone some money. Apparently the universe was listening and pointed Chuck Prophet in our direction – turns out he’s touring in Europe and needs to get his van and gear to Austin! So fate and the annual pilgrimage to the indie music Mecca have conspired to make an awesome adventure.
“…making music with my friends. I can’t wait to get on the road again”
What started as a solo journey, quickly turned into a quirky collaboration with: The Performer (Deborah Crooks), The Music Blogger (Stefan Aronsen), The Videographer (Matthew Washburn) and The Community Organizer (me). All of us will individually benefit from increased exposure at SXSW, but we will also be helping each other and promoting the Bay Area music scene at large. This is a perfect example of good things coming from communities that are open to working together.
“…let’s get together and feel alright”
Connecting communities with music is our mission at Local Music Vibe and this trip is a great chance to demonstrate this offline and in person. It may seem like a publicity stunt, but it is attracting attention to a positive and growing trend: Collaborating to build bigger opportunities for all rather than competing for scarce resources. We also get to experience life on the road and check out a lot of great music communities along the way.
“…get your kicks on route 66”
Well it’s I-10 now, but we’ll be making several stops along the way. We’re leaving bright and early Monday March 12 and arriving in Austin on Thursday March 15 with stops near LA, Tucson and Fort Stockton. Do you know some great music we should check out on the way? Would you like to meet up with us to find out how to grow your local music scene? If so, please follow our posts in the news section of localmusicvibe.com, on twitter using #LMVSXSW12 and on our main LMV Facebook Page. Feel free to leave constructive comments and ideas for our trip.
